Surety Bond Requirements for Student Loan Servicers in DC
Anyone servicing a student education loan for a DC-based borrower needs a student loan servicer (SLS) license from the District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB), and a $50,000 surety bond as part of that license, filed through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS).
Banks, savings and loan associations, credit unions, and certain postsecondary educational institutions are some of the entities exempt from this requirement. For more information about the licensing requirements, you can read the DC official code ยง 31-106.02.
How Much Does a DC Student Loan Servicer Bond Cost?
Sureties typically start pricing this bond around 0.75% of the required amount, which puts the starting cost at roughly $375 a year on the standard $50,000 bond. Your actual rate is driven mostly by your personal credit history. See our surety bond cost page for more on how pricing works.

Why Do You Need a Student Loan Servicer Bond in DC?
Your bond exists to recover potential damages a DC student loan borrower might suffer in case of your noncompliance, and to cover potential fees or expenses the commissioner levies against you. A valid claim against your bond is paid out by your surety up to the bond's full amount, and you are responsible for reimbursing that amount afterward.
With Bryant Surety Bonds, if a claim is ever filed against your bond, our in-house claims specialists will work directly with you to help manage the process.
If you're not familiar with how bonds work generally, our what is a surety bond page is a good starting point.
How to Get Bonded
Bryant Surety Bonds handles the bonding process in three steps.
- Submit our online application. It only takes a few minutes.
- Review and accept your quote. We shop your application to 20+ A-rated carriers, and your bond is issued as soon as you accept our rate.
- We file electronically with NMLS. Your Electronic Surety Bond (ESB) goes straight to your NMLS record.
Once your quote is approved, you'll need to grant us authority as your surety inside NMLS. DISB won't accept the bond without this step completed first.
How Do You Renew Your Bond?
Your surety bond needs to be renewed with your license.
A license issued before November 1 of a given year expires on December 31 of that same year.
A license issued on or after November 1 expires on December 31 of the following year instead.
Separate from your renewal, an annual report covering the prior year is due to DISB by January 30, required even if you had no DC activity that year.
Expect a reminder from us 1 to 2 months before your bond comes up for renewal. If we see an opportunity to lower your cost, we'll let you know.

Bryant Surety Bonds serves as a single point of contact across all 50 states, so you don't need to manage a separate surety relationship in every jurisdiction you're licensed in.

FAQ
What's the difference between the Student Loan Servicer License and the Automatic Student Loan Servicer License?
The standard SLS License covers private student loans, or both private and federal loans if your business handles both. The Automatic Student Loan Servicer License, available since October 2025, is a separate, faster path specifically for companies already under a federal contract to service federal student loans.
What counts as "servicing" a student loan under DC law?
DC defines servicing broadly: collecting payments and interest, maintaining account records, including during periods when no payment is due, communicating with borrowers about their loan, and taking action to help prevent a borrower from defaulting. If your business does any of this for DC borrowers, the licensing requirement likely applies to you.
What happens when you stop servicing loans in DC?
You must surrender your license to the commissioner within 15 days of ceasing to act as a student loan servicer, along with a signed notice confirming where your records will be kept.
