I am wondering why NC licensing would not be grandfathered in with the VA Contractor’s license. We may be moving from Richmond area to Triad area this fall.
North Carolina and Virginia do not have a contractor license reciprocity agreement, meaning an NC contractor license is not automatically transferable to Virginia. If you’re moving from the Richmond area to the Triad region, you’ll need to apply for a North Carolina contractor license and meet the state’s specific requirements.
However, North Carolina does offer a license by endorsement for certain classifications, allowing contractors licensed in other states to qualify for a license without taking the full exam—provided they meet experience and financial requirements. Virginia is typically included in these agreements, but eligibility depends on your specific license classification and work history.
To ensure a smooth transition, I recommend checking with the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors (NCLBGC) to determine what steps you’ll need to take. If you need help with the surety bond requirement, feel free to reach out for a free quote.
